Our project began with a problem: indoor spaces did not have enough access to the outdoors. Many rooms in buildings don’t even have windows for natural light, and feel very dim and removed. We wanted to design something that would bring the feel of the outdoors in, and first began with the idea of an indoor plant wall. We designed a moss wall that had a mirror as a background, the mirror acting as something to involve the viewer in the project. We had a difficult time figuring out how to mount the moss on the mirror, and began thinking of different ways to install plants on a vertical wall. We briefly explored an idea without plants at all for more simplicity. This design involved an opaque shade with a bright light and the silhouette of a tree behind, making it look like a window to the outside with the shade drawn. We decided that we wanted to use real plants for the natural green color, and thought about mounting them on a vertical wall in separate pots. We wanted to keep the tree design from the previous concept, and decided to make a tree out of bark on our vertical wall. We sketched multiple concepts where we placed moss plants at the end of each fake tree branch, and decided to begin building this concept. We drilled holes in the vertical wall to put the plant pots in instead of attaching them directly to the wall, this way the pot was hidden behind. Instead of making the tree out of bark, we decided to break a mirror and glue the pieces in the shape of a tree like a mosaic. This way, we could keep the original idea of incorporating a mirror but also keep the tree shape. Having the tree shape on the front with plants on the end of each branch helped to better bring an outdoor feel inside.
